A day after the Delhi Police booked self-styled godman Asaram Bapu in a sexual assault case filed against him by a minor girl, the administration of Chhindwara Gurukul run by him on Thursday alleged that the girl was handed over to her parents for "abnormal behaviour".
"The Class XII girl was handed over to her parents on August 9 after she started behaving abnormally. We also advised her parents to visit Asaram Bapu," Vivek Sharma, principal of the institution said. He, however, evaded the question what kind of abnormal behaviour the staff noticed in her.
The ashram had been surrounded by controversies in the past when two hostel inmates were found dead on the gurukul's premises within 48 hours in 2008. Though the Madhya Pradesh Police has claimed to have solved the mysterious cases with the arrest of a 14-year-old hostel inmate, the parents of the deceased refused to buy the police theory. Almost a year later, a woman teacher of the same gurukul school was found dead under mysterious circumstances. The body of Sandhaya Chourasia (25) was found in front of the main door of her house in November 2009.
According to the police, she was found dead in teachers' uniform which was torn. The murder case has not been solved yet. Bapu had hit the headlines early in January 2013 after the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) recommended his prosecution in a Rs.700-crore land grab case in Madhya Pradesh.
The case pertained to 200 acres of land belonging to Jayant Vitamins Limited (JVL) on the Delhi-Pune freight corridor. The land was allegedly grabbed by Asaram's followers in 2000. A month later, the godman courted a fresh controversy following the mysterious death of 24-year-old Rahul Pachouri at his ashram in Jabalpur.
In his complaint, the deceased's father Dileep Pachouri alleged that his son was poisoned by the disciples of the godman during a satsang at Jabalpur. However, Jabalpur police ruled out any hand of Asaram and his disciples in the incident. In June 2013, police filed an FIR against Asaram in Vidisha district for hurling abuses at one of his devotees.
