Ford recalls 370,000 vehicles due to steering risk

By on 6:35 PM
 Ford Motor Co

New York: Ford Motor Co said it was recalling about 370,000 vehicles in North America due to possible corrosion of the steering shaft that could cause a loss of steering. The recall, affecting the 2005-2011 model years of the Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car vehicles, will take place in high-corrosion US states and Canadian provinces, Ford said in a statement yesterday.
About 355,000 of the recalled cars are located in the US and some 15,000 in Canada. The vehicles are affected by de-icing chemicals used on roads during winter months. Ford said it would replace the lower intermediate steering shaft and, if necessary, replace the upper intermediate steering shaft. The corrosion problem "may potentially result in loss of steering," the US automaker said. "We are not aware of any accidents or injuries attributed to this condition," it said.
Ford said that any customers who have concerns regarding their vehicles' steering would also be able to have their vehicles inspected and repaired if necessary.

Facebook spam estimated to be a $200 million industry

Facebook

The people on Facebook who tell you how their friend made $85,000 a year working from home are doing quite well for themselves. The Guardian reports that a team of researchers in Italy estimated that Facebook spam generates around $202 million a year in annual revenue and that spammers get paid between $13 to $58 per post depending on the number of subscribers a particular page has.
While many of us find Facebook spammers annoying, the spammers themselves actually told the researchers that Facebook tolerates their presence because they generate more hits for Facebook pages. “Facebook doesn’t ban us, simply because we generate the content on Facebook itself,” one spammer explained. “Every day I materialize funny, and interesting content full of phrases and so forth that is shared and liked by thousands of users.
Without the fan pages Facebook would be an empty place. Tell me how many links do you see shared by your friends on your timeline every day? You see — the answer is simple.” Facebook, of course, denies that it tolerates spammers and says that it’s always working on new ways to limit the amount of spam posted onto fan pages.
“Protecting the people who use Facebook is a top priority for us, and we have developed a number of automated systems to identify potentially harmful links and stop them from spreading,” a company spokesperson told The Guardian. “Those systems quickly spotted these links, and we are working to clear them from the site now… We will keep improving our systems to ensure that people continue to have a safe experience on Facebook.”

Bollywood actor Parineeti Chopra visited the sets of the show Emotional Atyachaar and while talking about relationships she said that she finds one-woman men attractive.
The actress, who is busy promoting her forthcoming movie Shuddh Desi Romance, was accompanied by her co-star, debutante Vaani Kapoor. When Parineeti was asked to give an advice to the cheaters, she exclaimed: "Koi advice nahi (No advice for them). Thappad padega bus (They'll get slapped)." "I find it cooler when one guy is totally committed to one girl.
I find that very hot, it's very attractive. Why do you love your parents so much? Because you know they're together. It's an epiphany of a true and honest relationship," said Parineeti, 24. "When two people who are in a relationship and want to have fun, they should mutually agree and warn the other person to not get serious. If they mutually agree, then it's fine because they're just having fun," she added.

At 13, she's a senior student at Lucknow University

By on 6:03 PM
13 year old Sushma Verma

Lucknow: At an age when she should be in school, the 13-year-old daughter of a poor labourer in Uttar Pradesh has baffled everybody by galloping to a master's programme in microbiology. Sushma Verma was the youngest ever to pass class 12 exams, at just over 9 years. Now the teen prodigy has finished her graduation and has been named in the merit list for microbiology at the Lucknow University. She begins her master's classes next week. Behind her remarkable success lies the story of a family determined to educate their children, no matter what it takes. Sushma's father Tej Bahadur Verma, a daily wage labourer, earns barely two hundred rupees a day to feed a family of five. But when he saw his daughter's name on the merit list, he paid the initial fee of Rs. 25,000 instantly, not thinking about the rest - at least 75,000 rupees - to be paid later. The family had to sell their land to pay for Sushma's education. At their one-room home in Lucknow, their most precious possessions are a study table and a second-hand computer. "I think education is important for my children, so I didn't hesitate in selling the land. We never got the chance to study - I don't want my children to work as labourers, I will do whatever I can to educate them," says Verma. It took three years of college for Sushma to get used to studying with "big boys and girls". "At first, it was intimidating but everyone was really nice to me, so I was okay," she smiles. Many at her college are shocked to see a senior who looks little more than a schoolgirl. "She is much younger, but I will give her the respect any senior deserves," said Renu Rathore, a third year science student and a year 'junior' to Sushma. Sushma wants to be a doctor and tried for medical college after school but was just too young. Now she plans to give her dream another shot when she turns 18. Age, she says, is just a number.

Car, bike dealers to offer big discounts this festive season

By on 6:00 PM
Car, truck and two-wheeler makers

Car, truck and two-wheeler makers are likely to offer heavy discounts and other freebies to customers in the upcoming festive season, as the automotive sector looks for desperate measures to prop up sales. "The auto industry, as a whole, has not been doing too well. As a strategy, companies are bound to go for more aggressive customer acquisition, Pawan Goenka, President Automotive and former President of industry body SIAM told India Today on Friday.
" There will also be cost controls at all levels. The automotive industry has been battling falling sales for eight consecutive months in cars and 17 straight months for heavy vehicles, leading to these companies resorting to laying off staff. Even sales of two-wheelers, that so far have remained insulated, have slowed down over the last two months. Picture for representation. Normally, festive season goodies on offer from auto makers range from cash discounts, free insurance loyalty exchange bonus and accessories. Last year, car makers, including Honda Siel Cars, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki and Ford India reportedly offered discounts of around Rs.60,000 on their vehicles to capitalise on the festive season and revive sluggish demand.
With the festival of Onam approaching in Kerala, and the Ganpati festival in Maharashtra starting from September 9, car makers would look to boost sales through discounts. "There would definitely be discounts ranging from mid to heavy, since the industry is going through a slowdown, says Rakesh Batra, National Leader, Automotive Practice, EY (earlier Ernst & Young). "But that also depends on the level of inventory in products. Products with high inventory will see higher discounts, while new ones like the Ford Ecosport or products with long waiting list like the Honda Amaze, will not see such big discounts, he added. There would also be discounts at the dealer level. However, the escalating price of inputs in view of the falling rupee (for imported parts) can be a dampener," Batra said. Meanwhile, auto companies say there would be manpower 'adjustments' in tune with market realities.
"We continue to align a dynamic mix of permanent and temporary workers, including trainees and there tend to be the cyclical changes based on adjustments of temporary resources," a Tata Motors spokesperson said. "Additionally, we continue to look at our manpower planning in a prudent fashion to be in sync with the market environment, avoiding a blind replacement of superannuating employees. This has enabled a better alignment of our people resources to current business requirements. Tata Motors has cut its workforce by 21 per cent at its Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand, where it employed 5,838 people, even as its passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market fell 56 per cent to 10,824 units in July, from 26,240 units a year ago. M&M had laid off 500 temporary staff at its Chakan plant in Maharashtra. "While we do not comment on specifics of our manpower, we would like to reiterate that there has not been any dramatic change and reduction in our manpower in the Pantnagar factory (as suggested in some media reports).
We had been doing well till two to three months back," said Goenka. "But now, like every other auto company, we need to cut costs. Some companies go in for plant closures. Asked if the company would halt launch of new models in the wake of sluggish demand, Goenka said, "Product launch decisions are decided separately, and are long term plans. They do not depend on vagaries in the economy."

Diesel price may be hiked by Rs 3-5 a litre, LPG by Rs 50

By on 5:56 PM
Diesel prices

New Delhi: Diesel prices may be hiked by Rs 3-5 per litre, kerosene by Rs 2 and LPG by Rs 50 per cylinder as Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take steps to tackle a record Rs 180,000 crore of losses arising from dipping rupee and surging oil rates. Moily, who had on Thursday met Finance Minister P Chidambaram on the issue, on August 30 wrote to Singh saying without a price increase the government will have to shell out a record Rs 97,500 crore to subsidise diesel and cooking fuel.
"If the present position persists, the total under- recovery (revenue loss) would reach to a level of Rs 180,000 crore in the current financial year as compared to Rs 161,000 crore during 2012-13," he wrote to the Prime Minister. A 25 percent drop in rupee value has resulted in losses on diesel sales widening to Rs 10.22 per litre despite prices being raised by 50 paise a litre every month since January. This coupled with Rs 33.54 a litre loss on kerosene and Rs 412 on sale of ever 14.2-kg cooking gas (LPG) cylinder, the total revenue loss this fiscal comes to Rs 180,000 crore, he said adding even after upstream firms like ONGC chip in Rs 70,500 crore, a gap of Rs 97,500 crore would be left. An increase in rates is possible after monsoon session of Parliament ends on September 6.
Moily, who sent an almost identical note to Chidambaram, said a one rupee increase in diesel price will cut loss by Rs 4,522 crore in remainder of current fiscal while a Rs 3 per litre increase would trim losses by Rs 13,565 crore. If rates are raised by a one-time Rs 5 per litre, the losses would be cut to Rs 29,390 crore. The hikes proposed are one-time and are outside monthly revision in rates of 50 paisa happening since January. Similarly, a Rs 50 per cylinder increase in LPG rates would trim cooking gas losses by Rs 2,604 crore.
Besides, a possible Rs 2 per litre hike in kerosene price would cut losses by Rs 1,014 crore. The three price increases together would bring down government's subsidy outgo to Rs 50,928 crore, he argued. "I would like to bring to your kind notice that the consistent rupee depreciation has a severe impact on the under-recovery of the oil marketing companies (OMCs) and consequently on their financial health," Moily wrote to the Prime Minister and Chidambaram. Every one rupee depreciation of Indian rupee against US dollar increases the under-recovery (loss) of the public sector OMCs on sale of diesel, PDS kerosene and domestic LPG by about Rs 7,900 crore per annum, he said. During 2012-13, oil firms lost Rs 161,029 crore on selling diesel and cooking fuel at government controlled rates.
To make up for this, the government gave Rs 85,000 crore cash subsidy while upstream firms like ONGC gave Rs 60,000 crore. The balance was absorbed by fuel retailers. "The financial health of OMCs has been deteriorating over the years. During the year 2012-13 even after getting almost 100 per cent compensation, the OMCs could report a combined profit after tax (PAT) of mere Rs 8,552 crore, which was only 0.95 per cent of their combined turnover of Rs 892,653 crore," he said. The combined borrowing of the three retailers at the end of March 2013 was Rs 138,522 crore and their interest burden rose to Rs 10,254 crore. "The continuous increase in the borrowings have resulted in deterioration of the debt-equity ratio of OMCs over the years. Indian Oil Corp's (IOC) debt-equity ratio, which is the number of times debt over equity, has risen from 0.88 in March 2010 to 1.32 in March 2013 while for Hindustan Petroleum Corp (HPCL) soared from 1.84 to 2.46. Moily said in spite of the decision to authorise retailers to increase the price of diesel in the range of 40 to 50 paisa per litre per month and after seven price hikes since January 18 totaling Rs 4.25 per litre, the current under-recovery of Rs 10.22 per litre is higher than the level of prevailing loss of Rs 9.03 a litre in January. Syria strike possible by Wednesday: France

By on 4:02 PM
French President Francois Hollande

Paris: French President Francois Hollande said a military strike on Syria could come by Wednesday and that Britain's surprise rejection of armed intervention would not affect his government's stand. "France wants firm and proportionate action against the Damasacus regime," he said in an interview to Le Monde daily on Friday.
The French parliament is due to meet on Wednesday for an emergency Syria session. Hollande said the British parliament's rebuff would not influence the course of action Paris would take. "Each country is free to choose whether to take part in such an operation or not.
That holds true for Britain and France," he said. The French leader, who had vowed to "punish" President Bashar al-Assad's regime for an alleged chemical weapons strike on August 21, said "there was a body of indicators pointing to the responsibility of the Damascus regime." Hollande however ruled out strikes while the UN inspectors were in Syria. UN chief Ban Ki-moon has said they were expected to leave Syria by Saturday morning. The United States, which had warned that Assad would be crossing a "red line" if chemical weapons were used, said it was still seeking an "interventional coalition" for possible strikes on Syria while reserving the right to act alone.

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan had a starring role in Janmashtami celebrations at a special event held in Mumbai.
He participated in the traditional dahi handi ritual and played "Govinda" in the celebrations. The actor also danced to the tunes of some Marathi songs and recited some popular dialogues from his films.
SRK also appealed to the people present to respect women and their parents, a plea that struck a chord with the thousands gathered for the event. It seems that SRK's Chennai Express dialogue emphasizing the "power of the common man" seems to have hit just the right note with fans.

SA tour an opportunity for Test team to improve: Ganguly

By on 3:47 PM
Former indian captain Sourav Ganguly

New Delhi: Former captain Sourav Ganguly reckons the upcoming foreign tours, starting with the one in South Africa, will be an opportunity for the Indian Test team to regain lost ground overseas after successive reverses in England and Australia. They have been doing well in ODIs, but Ganguly doesn`t think that India`s Test team is on the decline either.
"You need to give them some time and as I said, they have played overseas and at home in the past 10-11 years. Yes, we have had a hiccup in Australia and England but we have an opportunity this season in South Africa, New Zealand, England and Australia to improve our performance and I don`t agree with the tag," Ganguly said. "Yes, They are a very good limited overs side but in Test matches too they have given results," he added. Ahead of what is going to be a gruelling tour of South Africa, Ganguly had a piece of advice for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men.
"He (Dhoni) has been to South Africa before and he knows how tough it is. It is not going to be just a one-day combination as Test matches are a different ball game. South Africa have got a great attack, they are a very good side at home. India have to play really really well. "India have been a good touring team in the past 10-11 years apart from the hiccups in England and Australia. So, I can suggest that play positive and realise that it is a hard tour.
It will be a tour that will challenge a lot of players and you have to raise your game," he told `ndtv.Com`. As discussion turned to his long-time teammate Sachin Tendulkar, Ganguly said the decision of retirement from Test cricket should be left to the Mumbaikar himself. Asked if Tendulkar should retire after the South Africa tour, Ganguly said, "It`s his decision. He has done a lot for world cricket and let him decide the time as he deserves it. On Tendulkar becoming a Rajya Sabha member, the Kolkatan said: "I asked Sachin what is he doing in Rajya Sabha? Obviously he was nominated by the President of India, I hope he does well in what ever he does as I have a tremendous respect for him for what he has achieved for Indian cricket. "I have seen him closely when he was at his best, I have got terrific admiration for him.
For whatever he does, he does it well and he makes his family and his country proud." He also hoped Tendulkar gets the Bharat Ratna. "He is India`s Bharat Ratna!" Ganguly said. Ganguly did not rule out the possibility of currently out-of-favoured players like Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh making a comeback to the Indian team. "Yuvraj Singh has been India`s great ODI player, Virender Sehwag is probably the best opening batsman I have seen after Sunil Gavaskar, his records speak about his ability. Sehwag is 32-33, you can`t write them off.
Will they make a comeback, only time will tell because it depends on how they play and how many runs they get." Ganguly said he was not interested in joining politics. "I don`t want to be in politics, I want to be involved in the game as it gives me a lot of happiness and will find out more opportunities and make the most of it." Talking about controversial pacer S Sreesanth, who was jailed on charges of spot-fixing in this year`s IPL, Ganguly said it will be a complete waste of talent if the allegations against him are proved. "He has done well as a Test bowler but had been a bit inconsistent which was something to do with his temperament. But if things (allegations of spot-fixing in IPL) are proved, then it is a complete waste of talent," Ganguly said. PTI

Satyagraha movie review

By on 3:40 PM
Satyagraha

Cast:Amitabh Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Arjun Rampal, Amrita Rao, Manoj Bajpai
 Director: Prakash Jha
 SPOILERS AHEAD:
Prakash Jha’s Satyagraha is a political film that, for all its well-meaning bluster, neither stings nor scalds. It fails to hit the core of the truth that it seeks. The Apaharan-Raajneeti-Aarakshan formula is intact here. Director and writer Jha takes up a topical socio-political issue and forges a drama designed to deliver a message of import. Unfortunately, Satyagraha barely skims the surface of a complex theme, leaving many a crucial question unanswered.
As a result, it can hardly be expected to shake a vast nation and its somnolent rulers out of their torpor. Satyagraha spares no effort to reflect the rising tide of public anger against a creaking, corrupt and callous system that treats citizens of the country like a load of dirt. The script draws inspiration from several real-life scams and political shenanigans, and constructs a predictable narrative that underlines the undeniable might of social media.
The 2G scam, mining policy flip-flops, the ills of coalition politics, underhand deals between fixers and ministers, and the growing role of Twitter and Facebook in driving the popular ire against corruption and poor governance are all alluded to. All this is socially relevant all right, but strictly from the point of view of the plot, it amounts to a bit of overkill. The film raises all the right issues, but it tends to not only too many loose cards on the table but also to employ the wrong tools to get its point across. The righteous indignation that Satyagraha articulates never quite assumes the shape of a full-fledged conflagration that can sock the audience in the face.
On the soundtrack, we often hear “Ambikapur is burning”. We see that reality only in the form of slogan-shouting protestors, sermonizing activists haranguing an unresponsive administration and an aimless bunch of patrolling policemen. The fire that is supposed to be raging in the fictional upcountry district that the film is set in does not exactly leap into the sky and turn into genuine, palpable ire. A spirited fightback by an upright and idealistic retired school principal Dwarka Anand (Amitabh Bachchan) and the transformation of a telecom czar Manav Raghavendra (Ajay Devgn) into an aggressive people’s leader constitute the two principal strands of the Satyagraha narrative.
Neither develops into a full-bodied battle of attrition that can hold a two-and-a-half-hour film together. A problem that has beset Jha’s recent films is back to haunt Satyagraha as well. The principal characters do not converse like you and me. They make speeches from a rostrum. When they are not letting out hot air from a pedestal, they deliver grand statements of intent to each other and everyone within earshot. It is an approach that is better suited to street theatre than to the big screen. This is not to say that Satyagraha is an unduly strident film that raves and rants about how wrong things are with Indian democracy. In fact, Jha shows flashes of characteristic brilliance in the manner that he handles the film’s quieter moments. A couple of scenes stand out.
A shocked-into-silence Dwarka Anand is dignity personified as he demonstrates his grief at the accidental death of his engineer-son (Indraneil Sengupta). Amitabh Bachchan, who is as much in control here as he has ever been, packs more emotion into that single moment of tragic stillness than he is allowed to do in the reams of dialogue that he delivers. In another sequence, driven journo Yasmin Ahmed (Kareena Kapoor) confronts the briefly discredited Manav Raghavendra when he returns from the cold to reclaim his place in the Ambikapur sun.
Words, both angry and contrite, are exchanged, but it is the conciliatory kiss that seals it for the twosome. This is deft minimalism. Sadly, such moments are rather rare in Satyagraha. As the speeches roll, angry slogans rent the air and Facebook updates and tweets flash across the screen as a device meant to capture the disgruntlement of the people, the characterizations sinks into shallow generalisations. The chief antagonist, Ambikapur MLA and state home minister Balram Singh (Manoj Bajpayee), is projected as a standard Bollywood villain who smirks and scowls while strutting around the place with the air of a man who knows no stops.
The film’s pivotal character, Dwarka Anand, too, never acquires a tangible, believable feel. He is a larger-than-life Gandhi-like figure who abhors greed and violence with equal vehemence. Dwarka Anand, Daduji to his followers, slaps the district collector for not doing his job, gets promptly thrown behind bars, and sparks an agitation that sends the politicians and policemen of Ambikapur scurrying for cover. The ageing teacher’s Anna Hazare-style fast-unto-death, undertaken on a raised platform and under a shamiana in what is called the Ram Leela Maidan, is a laboured plot twist that becomes a lame pretext for another round of speechifying.
Satyagraha has a clutch of fine performances with Bachchan, not surprisingly, leading the way with a measured interpretation of a character that sparks a revolt that threatens to spiral out of his grasp. It might be a touch difficult to accept Ajay Devgn as a fresh-out-of-college wannabe entrepreneur. Neither does Kareena Kapoor Khan’s scribe look the part of a television reporter caught in the swirling heat and dust of a small-town revolution.
But neither Ajay nor Kareena lets the gaps in logic throw them off balance. Manoj Bajpayee, despite being saddled with a poorly etched part, is the real star of the show. He evokes mirth and provokes loathing with minimum of apparent effort. Parts of Satyagraha make perfect sense but, on the whole, it never comes close to clicking into top gear. It leaves you more disappointed than angry.

Barcelona survive Atletico Madrid scare to win Spanish Super Cup

By on 1:28 PM
Spanish Super Cup

Lionel Messi missed a late penalty attempt before Barcelona clinched the Spanish Super Cup despite being held to a 0-0 draw by 10-man Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. Messi had a chance to put the result beyond doubt in 89th but fired his penalty kick off the crossbar to finish a forgettable night for the Argentina star. Barcelona eventually claimed the trophy on away goals following the 1-1 draw in the opening leg last week. Atletico's disciplined defense stifled a Barcelona's attack featuring Neymar making his first starting appearance for his new club.
And the visitors enjoyed the best scoring opportunities - other than Messi's penalty attempt - but weren't able to get the critical goal, mainly because of Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes. Atletico's chances were hurt in the 81st when Filipe Luis was given a red card for apparently hitting Dani Alves. The scoreless draw meant Neymar's first-leg goal was the difference. "I'm happy with the title. Whenever there is a title in play what counts is winning it," Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said. "But as far as the team goes, I want to see more.
Above all in these types of games, we need to find more precision and the ability to create more spaces." Messi was back for Barcelona after missing one game due to a left thigh injury sustained in the opening Super Cup match last week. But the four-time world player of the year was not his usual dynamic self, lacking his spark and finishing touch. He uncharacteristically scuffed a close-range shot off a pass from Sergio Busquets to start his off night. Martino gave Neymar his first start in his fourth official game for Barcelona since his 57-million euro move from Santos in June. Messi and Neymar had only previously been on the pitch together for seven minutes because Martino said he wanted to ease the 21-year-old Brazil striker into his new team. But those eager to see the two together were disappointed. While Messi was below par, Neymar wasn't able to exploit his speed and dribbling against Atletico's physical defense. "I think that individually they both played well," Martino said of the pair.
"It's true they didn't find one another or combine much. With Neymar playing on the left and Messi tending to move out to the right, they are far away. But I don't doubt they will find each other." Barcelona may have increased its record of Spanish Super Cups contested between the league and Copa del Rey champions to 11, but its performance over both legs only raised questions of its transition under Martino since July. Atletico, meanwhile, kept building on its good start to the Spanish league and its preparations for a return to the Champions League.
"We played both games very well," said Atletico coach Diego Simeone, who guided his team to the Copa last May. "We had more chances than they did. I am very proud of my players because we were competitive across both legs with Barcelona, which is the best team in the world." Atletico's plan to relinquish the ball and look to hit on the break worked in the first half. Diego Costa produced Atletico's first chance on goal in the 35th when he passed for David Villa to set up Jorge "Koke" Resurreccion, only for the young midfielder to weakly shoot into the Valdes' arms. Atletico missed another chance to go ahead in the 42nd when Arda Turan drew an excellent save from Valdes.
Needing to score to offset Barcelona's away-goal advantage, Atletico dictated the pace early in the second half and shifted the action to Barcelona's area. Valdes was called upon to make another one-armed save to keep out Villa's curling effort in the 56th. Martino sent Pedro Rodriguez on in the 65th to lift his team, and even though Neymar wasted Dani Alves' cross minutes later, the Spanish champions regained control. Barcelona was further helped when Filipe Luis was sent off, and Pedro appeared to have given Messi the opportunity to ensure the trophy when he earned a foul in the box from Miranda.

Singer Madonna has topped a list of the world's highest earning celebrities in 2013, according to a poll conducted by Forbes magazine.
The singer was named number one in the annual rich list despite the fact that her most recent album "MDNA" turned out to be a commercial flop. It had sales of under one million, but she has bagged the title because her accompanying tour boosted her estimated earnings to $125 million between June 2012 and June 2013, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Director Steven Spielberg ranked second in the list with estimated earnings of $100 million.
Author E.L. James shared the third position in the list with radio personality Howard Stern and music mogul Simon Cowell with $95 million each.

Kareena Kapoor changes name to Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena Kapoor with saif

Mumbai: Kareena Kapoor Khan. That’s how her name appears in the credits of ‘Satyagraha’. She got married last year. ‘Talaash’ released soon after. But her name flashed as Kareena Kapoor in the opening credits. However, in her second release after her shaadi, she has added Khan to her name. Actors are known to be paranoid about changing names especially when their career is going great. It’s common for actors to experiment with different spellings for the luck factor. Shraddha A Salla, a tarot card and numerologist, analyses KKK’s new name.
She says this change will work very well for the actress personally as well as professionally, “Kareena is strongly ruled by Jupiter — the planet of growth and abundance, Jupiter supports creativity and entertainment, and makes one rise to his/her peak in this profession. Novelist Chetan Bhagat attacked for tweet on rape and rupee

novelist Chetan Bhagat

New Delhi: Best-selling novelist Chetan Bhagat faced nationwide anger on social media sites on Wednesday after tweeting that the country's plunging currency had been "raped". This evening, the writer tweeted in response, "Really. I am trending now? Surely reforming me must be the most pressing issue. Economies crash everyday."
The controversy began with him posting this tweet - "The rupee is asking, is there no punishment for my rapists?" The comments by Mr Bhagat, whose novels are popular with India's middle-class youth, came amid renewed outrage over violence against women after the gang-rape in Mumbai of a photographer last week. Twitter users slammed the former investment banker.
"Making a fun of a serious offence rather an inhuman act & comparing with downfall of Rupee is NOT AT ALL funny," wrote one user. Mr Bhagat swiftly deleted his tweet as the uproar grew, calling it "harmless" and saying he had referred to rape as a "metaphor" for the rupee's troubles. The Mumbai attack rekindled memories of the fatal gang-rape of a 23-year-old student in New Delhi last December that sparked nationwide protests and brought to the surface anger about violence against women in India.

Yasin Bhatkal allegedly behind these deadly attacks in India

By on 1:09 PM
Yasin Bhatkal,terror group Indian Mujahideen

New Delhi: Yasin Bhatkal, the 30-year-old co-founder of the terror group Indian Mujahideen, has been arrested in Bihar. Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said Bhatkal was arrested last night and is being interrogated by the Bihar Police. Intelligence agencies say Bhatkal has masterminded and helped execute some of the worst terror attacks in India in recent years.
In February this year, 16 people were killed and 80 injured when two bombs ripped through a crowded market in the heart of Hyderabad. Intelligence officials say that security camera footage establishes that Bhatkal planted a bag with a bomb at the German Bakery in Pune in February 2010. In that attack, 17 people were killed and nearly 60 injured. Two months later, two bombs exploded inside a Bangalore stadium, packed for a cricket match which was to start an hour later. Fifteen people were injured. A third bomb was defused outside the stadium. Bhatkal is the main accused.
The next year, he allegedly planned the trio of rush-hour bomb blasts in Mumbai in July 2011 in which 27 people were killed and 130 injured. The Mujahideen is accused of planting five bombs in Delhi that exploded within minutes of each other in September 2008. At least 30 people were killed and more than 100 injured. The group serves as the Indian arm of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, the terror group based in Pakistan. A top Lashkar commander, Abdul Karim Tunda, who belongs to Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested near the Nepal border earlier this month. He is accused of helping mastermind serial blasts in Mumbai in 1993 in which 250 people died, as well as more than 40 other deadly bomb attacks across the country.

Google updates Play policies to make it mandatory for games to use its in-app billing service, regulate interstitial ads and more

By on 5:50 PM
Google Play Android

Google has made changes to its Google Play Developer Program Policies regulating certain apps, payments within apps and advertising.
Google sent an email to developers registered with the program summarising the changes:
 - Streamlined the ads policy, with guidance on interstitial ad behaviour, and a new "System Interference" provision, which prohibits ads in system notifications or home screen icons, and requires user consent when an app changes specified settings on a device. - A revised hate speech policy that provides more comprehensive coverage, while recognising Google Play's role as a platform for free expression.
 - Clarification that the gambling policy extends to all games that offer cash or other prizes; that virtual goods and currency in games are subject to the payment processor policy, that incentives should not be provided to users to rate an app; that artificially inflating an app's install count is prohibited, and that the Google Play Program Policy applies to all developer information or content made available on the Store. The most significant change comes in the form of mandating use of Google Play's in-app billing service as the method of payment for games offering virtual goods or currencies within a game.
For other apps offering additional content, services or functionality, using Google Play's in-app billing service is also mandatory except "where the payment is primarily for physical goods or services" or "where payment is for digital content or goods that may be consumed outside of the application itself." This essentially means that offer virtual currency or coins through an in-app payment would only be able to accept payments for subscriptions through Google Play's in-app billing service and not through any other third-party payment provider(such as PayPal, Zong and others).
Google has also added "games of skill that offer prizes of cash or other value" under the gambling cause preventing any games that offer real money from being offered through the Play Store. What does that mean for the developers and end users? Google has tightened its control on ads offered by apps that hamper the user experience of the Android devices. It clarifies that "Interstitial ads may only be displayed inside of the app they came with. Forcing the user to click on ads or submit personal information for advertising purposes in order to fully use an app is prohibited.
A prominent and accessible target must be made available to users in any interstitial ad so they may dismiss the ad without penalty or inadvertent click-through." This means that some apps that pushed ads as notifications even when they were not running would not be allowed in the Play Store unless the developer makes changes to prevent the same. Google has also clarified that it won't allow content that comes under hate speech in apps offered via the Play Store.
It says, "We don't allow content advocating against groups of people based on their race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, veteran status, or sexual orientation/ gender identity." With the revised policy, it appears that Google intends to regulate the Play Store in favour of the user, reducing spammy apps and making the OS more secure. However, game developers would now have to give a30 percent cut to Google on in-app sales, similar to Apple, since all purchases must now be routed via Google's in-app billing service. On the up side, it means that game developers via users will be able to leverage carrier billing where it is available.

The area irrigated by the dam when it was built was 69,000 acres. Early in 20th century, the irrigated area has gone up to a million acres.

Task force to monitor terror cases against Muslims, MHA moved

Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan

New Delhi: Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan's demand for a special task force to monitor and review terror cases involving minorities has been referred to Home Ministry, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday. Khan told the Upper House that the matter to set up a separate task force has been referred to Home Ministry Affairs.
"The matter has been discussed at an appropriate level and referred to MHA to set up a separate task force in the ministry to look into terror-related matters involving minorities. Ministry of Minority Affairs has no role in this regard," he said while replying to a question by an MP about the fate of the task force proposed by him in July.
Khan's proposal to set up the special task force had invited criticism from BJP, which said it is an attempt to appease Muslims. However, the minister justified his demand, saying many Muslims have been languishing in jails, often on trumped up charges. PTI

Indian airports on alert over women suicide bombers carrying explosives inside breasts

airports

After the London's Heathrow airport, major airports in India have been put on alert over intelligence inputs on possible attacks by women suicide bombers carrying explosives implanted in their breasts. As such, CISF personnel have been told to step up security checks on women passengers in the absence of full body scanners in Indian airports, said a newspaper report on Monday.
The issue here however is of women passengers objecting to the increased checks and accusing the security personnel of violating their privacy. A top CISF official said in the report that they were trying to coordinate with international agencies on detecting such improvised explosive devices concealed in implants since there was no foolproof solution.
The officer said it was a sensitive issue and women personnel had been told to alert as well as maintain decency. He said non-metal explosives embedded in breast implants are hard to detect with machines. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security is also working on the threat. According to a UK newspaper, Al Qaeda bomb-maker Ibrahim al-Asiri has apparently found a method to fool airport scanners by concealing explosives in implants.

Syria warns US, says intervention would burn entire Middle East

By on 5:01 PM
Syria

Damascus: Frowning at the US, Syria on Sunday warned that any possible intervention will set the entire Middle East ablaze and attack on Syria would be "no easy trip". Syria's word of warning comes as the American naval forces continued to inch nearer to Syria and the Obama administration weighed various options including that of military intervention in Syria after the purported chemical attacks claimed 355 lives in Syrian suburb of Ghouta on Wednesday. Speaking in an interview, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said any attack on Syria would risk escalating violence across the Mideast.
"The basic repercussion would be a ball of fire that would burn not only Syria but the whole Middle East. An attack on Syria would be no easy trip," Zoubi said. Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Abbas Arakji, echoed similar warning when he said that an American military intervention in Syria will "complicate matters." "Sending warships will not solve the problems but will worsen the situation," Arakji said in comments carried by Iran's Arabic-language TV Al-Alam. He added that any such US move does not have international backing and that Iran "rejects military solutions." A top military official from Iran said that US will have to face consequences if it crossed the red line.
"If the United States crosses this red line, there will be harsh consequences for the White House," armed forces deputy chief of staff Massoud Jazayeri was quoted as saying. Interestingly, US President Barack Obama had used the term "red lines" for the use of chemical weapons in Syria, warning that it would evoke tough action. Iranian military official also accused the US and Israel of planning the war in Syria. "The terrorist war underway in Syria was planned by the United States and reactionary countries in the region against the resistance front (against Israel)," Fars quoted Jazayeri as saying. "Those who add fire to the oil will not escape the vengeance of the people," added Jazayeri. Syrian rebels claim that the attack was carried out by the government's forces but the regime has hit back by counter-alleging that the rebels were behind the attack. Syrian state TV also showed images of plastic jugs, gas masks, vials of an unspecified medication, explosives and other items that it said were seized from rebel hideouts Saturday.
An army statement issued late Saturday said the discovery of the weapons "is clear evidence that these gangs are using chemical weapons against our people and soldiers with help from foreign sides." Top Syrian rebel commander Salim Idris refuted government's allegations saying that opposition forces did not use chemical weapons on Saturday and that "the regime is lying." With Agency Inputs

Crocodile snatches man in front of 15 people in Australia

crocodile

Sydney: A 24-year-old man was snatched by a crocodile in front of at least 15 onlookers as he swam across a northern Australian river with a friend, police said Sunday. Northern Territory police said the man was with a group celebrating a birthday at the Mary River Wilderness Retreat, about 110 kilometres (70 miles) from Darwin, on Saturday when he decided to plunge into the water. "They were watching him swim across," senior sergeant Geoff Bahnert told AFP of the group.
"And they just saw a crocodile with him in its jaws." Police conducted a search for the man, but were unsuccessful. The search was continuing Sunday, Bahnert said, adding that the largest crocodile at the site had been shot and killed as a precaution. Reports suggested the men had ignored warnings not to swim in the river because of the risk of a crocodile attack. "We tell people to stay away from the water, they obviously went against this (and) a man was taken," an employee of the resort, Erin Bayard, told News Corp Australia. "We say to everybody it's full of crocs.
It's one of the most populated rivers in the Territory, every couple of kilometres there is a large croc." Saltwater crocodiles, which can grow up to seven metres (23 feet) long and weigh more than a tonne, are a common feature of Australia's tropical north. They have been protected since the 1970s and their numbers have increased steadily since, along with the number of human encounters. In December, a nine-year-old boy was taken by a four-metre crocodile while swimming in the Northern Territory, one month after a seven-year-old girl went missing while swimming, also in the north.

25 years in making, encyclopedia of Hinduism is finally complete

By on 4:51 PM
encyclopedia of Hinduism

A comprehensive encyclopedia of one of the world's major religions is set to be unveiled next week in South Carolina. The 11-volume work covers Hindu spiritual beliefs, practices and philosophy, and is the culmination of a 25-year academic effort. The encyclopedia is written in English and includes about 7,000 articles on Hinduism and its practices. The work also deals with Indian history, languages, art, music, dance, architecture, medicine, and women's issues.
The entire encyclopedia contains more than 1,000 illustrations and photographs. Brightly colored images of Hinduism's deities fill entire pages, with foot-noted explanations of the forms and powers God can take in the religion. "The goal was to have something pretty definitive - not just about Hinduism, but about the whole South Asian tradition," said University of South Carolina professor Hal French, who met with a small group of scholars in 1987 to offer academic support for the project.
"This hadn't really been attempted before," said French, 83, a distinguished professor emeritus of religious studies at the school and an associate editor. "It is a milestone of research that brought together both Eastern and Western scholarship." French, who specializes in the religions of Asia and served as an associate editor of the encyclopedia, said a primary inspiration for the work is one of India's most revered spiritual leaders, Swami Chidanand Saraswati, who is coming to the USC conference that will celebrate the work's launch. Swami Chidanand founded the India Heritage Research Foundation, which became the parent organization behind the encyclopedia effort.
He is president of the Parmarth Niketan Ashram spiritual retreat in Rishikesh, India, and travels to visit with Hindu followers in the United States several times a year. The encyclopedia's volumes run from 600 to more than 700 pages. Some 3,000 copies are being issued in the first printing and will be of interest to libraries, religious institutions, and those studying Indian culture around the world, French said. Hinduism is the world's third-largest religion, with 1 billion followers, according to a Pew Research Center study published this year. Christians number 2.2 billion and Muslims 1.6 billion, the study showed. Hinduism's basic teaching is that the soul never dies, but is reborn each time the body dies. The soul may be reborn in human or animal form. The cycle of death and rebirth continues until a soul reaches spiritual perfection, and is united in total enlightenment and peace with the supreme being.
Many Hindus who settled around the world have found that they need a comprehensive source of information on the religion for their children, said Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, managing editor of the encyclopedia and a secretary of the India Heritage Research Foundation. Children came home from schools where a teacher may have discussed whether Hinduism is a belief in one god, or many gods, and need the proper background to explain it, Sadhvi Bhagawati said in a telephone interview. "They wanted a source to go to so they could pass the correct information to their children," she said. She explained that the encyclopedia project took more than 20 years because "it began in pre-computer days."
"If we started today, it might just have taken a few years," said Sadhvi Bhagawati, who describes herself a disciple of Swami Chidanand. Sadhvi Bhagawati said some of the experts who contributed to the encyclopedia wrote their articles by hand in the script of their original languages. She said they included authors who wrote in Tamil - spoken in southern India, Sri Lanka and Singapore - or Bengali - spoken in other regions of India and Bangladesh. The articles had to be typed and translated, and translations into English had to be checked again. "Each article ended up being edited eight to 10 times," Sadhvi Bhagawati said. Dr. Meera Narasimhan, vice dean of the USC School of Medicine and chairman of the department of neuropsychiatry, said she met Swami Chidanand several years ago, learned about his and USC's involvement in the project, and has been working to support it ever since.
"I regard this as a legacy that will be left behind for generations to come," she said, studying the first set of volumes to arrive at the university on Wednesday. They are to be donated to the university's library system. The physician is a specialist in mind-body connections, and she spearheaded the organization of Monday's conference. A native of Bangalore, India, Narasimhan began her medical studies there, went to Yale University for her residency and fellowship, and has been at USC since 2004. "This brings together my Indian heritage, my work as a physician in America and as a Gamecock," Narasimhan said, using the sports nickname for USC supporters. Monday's conference is attracting scholars, Hindu religious leaders and those of Indian heritage from around the globe, she said. It is free and open to the public. "This encyclopedia will have a very wide reader base because it covers such a range of subjects," Narasimhan said. All proceeds from the encyclopedia are going to a charitable organization dedicated to the environmental cleanup of rivers in India, she said.

Modi blasts 'mute' PM, says both UPA & rupee have lost value

By on 4:59 PM
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday continued his tirade against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the falling rupee, saying both he and the domestic currency have turned 'mute'. "There was a time when Indian rupee was making lots of noise. But today it has lost its voice. And similarly we are unable to hear the voice of our Prime Minister. Both have turned mute," he said here in Saurashtra region. The Chief Minister was speaking at a function organised to felicitate him for creation of Morbi as a separate district carved out of Rajkot.
Modi, on August 15, had announced the formation of seven new districts. The BJP Election Campaign Committee Chief, in his Independence Day speech, had attacked Singh on various issues, including the falling rupee and the stand-offs with Pakistan and China. Expressing serious concern over the continuous fall in the value of rupee, Modi said, "today our currency is on deathbed. It is in terminal stage and urgently needs attention of a doctor." Training guns at the Congress-led ruling coalition at the Centre, he said "at the time of coming to power this Government had promised to reduce inflation within 100 days, but that has eluded the country." "At present both - rupee and UPA Government, have lost their value.
Time has come to stop our country from destruction. The Central Government is misguiding the country. People need to know why our country is heading towards destruction." At the function, Modi was weighed in silver and around 80kg of the white metal was presented to him by representatives of ceramic industry of Morbi. Modi announced that proceeds from the donated silver will be used for building the proposed 'Statue of Unity' monument of Sardar Patel on Narmada river. In his almost hour-long address, Modi singled out the Congress, which is out of power in the state since mid-1990s, for criticism. "The party should ponder why people are not allowing it to enter Gujarat".

Kejriwal says Indians are first-class citizens but victims of a third-class govt

By on 4:51 PM
Kejriwal

The two main political parties in Delhi-Congress and BJP-may still be struggling to finalise their Assembly poll strategy, but the new entrant in the fray-Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)- is ready with its plan in case of a re-election. "Most probably, AAP will get more than 20 seats. I am not claiming this. AajTak and other media reports have predicted this. This is the situation right now, when elections are three months away.
Our popularity graph is rising and we are confident of getting even more seats," said AAP founder Arvind Kejriwal while addressing students at St. Stephen's college on Friday.
Envisaging a hung Assembly scenario, Kejriwal said: "No party will be in position to form the government on its own. And it is very much clear that I am not going to support any party. This will lead to a situation of re-election. In re-election, I am sure that we will get complete majority and our party will emerge victorious." He exhorted the youth to get involved in the political process.
"I am not telling you to join AAP or any other party. But, don't stay away from politics. It is because we have to change the political system. They have sold everything- iron, coal, etc," he said in his one and a half hourlong speech on 'Role of youth in Democracy'. Kejriwal said most of the people in this country are honest but they have become victims of dirty politics and corruption. He was cheered with a big round of applause when he said: "Indians are first-class people and victims of third-class governance." The former IRS officer chose to address the students in Hindi as he wanted to have a "heart-to-heart talk" with the gen-next. "We need to clean the politics of this country.
We know that dirty politics is the root of all the problems in this country. We are not able to get even basic amenities like health, education, roads, water and sanitation because of dirty politics. Unless we clean the politics, we can't get basic facilities," he said. Taking a dig at the Congress, he said: "We have decided that two members of a family should not get tickets as a lot of family politics is already going on." Reiterating his Jan Lokpal promise, he said he will make it a reality once his party comes to power. "We, under the leadership of Anna Hazare, tried for Jan Lokpal for more than two years, but could not succeed in our attempts. They challenged us to come into politics and finally we had to come to change the political system," he said.

Ayodhya yatra: Is ‘84-kosi’ apolitical?

By on 4:46 PM
Chaurasai Kosi Parikrama

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad`s (VHP) proposed ‘Chaurasai Kosi Parikrama’ has raised political heat in the state of Uttar Pradesh, where a pro-Muslim Samajwadi Party government is in power. With VHP leader Ashok Singhal determined to go ahead with the proposed yatra and the BJP backing it, a bitter showdown is imminent with Akhilesh Yadav-led government going all out to prevent the march. Politically speaking, the VHP, possibly under the direction of BJP`s parent organisation, the RSS, is trying to reignite the Hindutva card by raking up the Ram temple issue in the communally sensitive state.
The success of the VHP`s yatra will not augur well for the pro-Muslim SP government in the state and that`s why it is hell bent on stopping it at any cost. Fearing that the success of the VHP`s yatra and the government’s failure to prevent it will dent the Samawadi Party`s traditional Muslim vote bank, the state government has turned Ayodhya into a fortress and made elaborate security arrangements in the temple town and the adjoining districts of the state.
The state government has imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the six districts – Faizabad, Barabanki, Gonda, Ambedkarnagar, Basti and Bahraich - that fall on the yatra route. The SP government has placed heavy security to bar people from participating in the march planned by the VHP to press for the resumption of religious activities at the contested Ayodhya site believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram. The administration has cracked down on the VHP and issued arrest warrants against 300 members of the outfit.
VHP leader Ashok Singhal has also been placed under house arrest in Allahabad as part of the clampdown on the saints` community. However at this juncture, the moot question is whether the country is going back to the late 1980s era when communal politics was at peak - and if that happens, then it would surely not augur well for the health of the nation, which has several other important issues to deal with like – national security, rising prices, corruption, unemployment and terrorism.
Though the SP government is making all efforts to tackle the VHP, but reports suggest that this is just an eyewash. There may be a secret understanding between the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the VHP yatra as the two parties want to capitalise and consolidate their respective vote banks through their responses to the proposed procession. What lends credence to this theory is the strong support from BJP and its parent organisation, the RSS, to the VHP`s yatra.
Though the two have categorically denied allegations of a `secret deal` it is clear that the BJP wants to revive itself in the politically crucial Hindi heartland of the country, where it was a major force sometimes back. Similarly, the Samajwadi Party, which takes pride in projecting itself as the chief custodian of the minorities, also wants to re-establish its secular credential and its vote bank. Another incident which points towards a political connivance between the two sides - the BJP and the SP – is a recent meeting between Mulayam Singh Yadav and VHP president Ashok Singhal. Interestingly, UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and other senior leaders of VHP were also present during the meeting.
Shortly after the meeting, a delegation of Hindu saints declared that SP chief Mulayam Singh had agreed to convince the Muslim leaders, clerics and ulemas to pave way for the construction of a grand Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya. Another fact, which suggests a political motive behind the yatra is that the `Chaurasi Kosi parikrama` by seers and holy men had already been undertaken during March-April this year, so what is the need for taking out a second religious procession in such a short span of time. Importantly, just a day after denying permission to VHP for its ‘84-kosi parikrama’, the young Chief Minister doled out 20 percent funds of the state`s welfare schemes for minorities.
The timing of the two important steps taken by the state government surely raises eyebrows. If the state government was so concerned about the minorities, then why did it not take the decision earlier while preparing budget for this financial year? In that way, the schemes would have been implemented and benefited a vast chunk of state`s Muslim population. The Uttar Pradesh government, which has faced huge criticism for suspending the young IAS officer, Durga Shakti Nagpal, has come under scanner for failing to control communal riots since it came to power in March 2012. Clearly, the SP government is indulging in the divisive politics too.
Also, Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department Minister Azam Khan, who is considered to be the most prominent Muslim face of the ruling party, had openly said that the meeting between Ashok Singhal and SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav would send a wrong message to the minority community. Azam had said, "Muslims across the world consider Ashok Singhal equally guilty for the demolition of the mosque," adding, "A wrong message was going to the community." This itself shows that even Azam Khan was not consulted before the Mulayam-Singhal meet.
The Ram temple issue has always had a polarising effect in UP politics, and the latest developments are a clear indication that the SP wants to capitalise on the situation by opposing the VHP yatra, and the BJP, which spearheaded the Ram temple movement in the late 1980s era, wants to regain the lost ground in UP as it a Hindu majority state. The appointment of BJP national general secretary Amit Shah as UP in-charge proves this point. Shah, during his first visit to the state had said, "I have prayed that we together build a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya as soon as possible and restore Lord Ram to his rightful place." Even Govardhanpeeth Puri Shankaracharya Swami Adhokchajan and Akhil Baharatiya Akhara Parishad chief Shri Mahant Gyandas have raised questions over the proposed yatra and urged for it to be stopped. While, Swami Adhokchajan described the parikrama as detrimental to communal amity, Gyandas said that organising the ritual during "Chaturmas" is not in line with the Vedic traditions. The stoic silence maintained by the UPA government at this juncture is also very surprising.
The Congress party should remember that then Prime Minister Narasimha Rao had failed to control the 1992 crisis and what transpired was very unfortunate. Let us hope that the grand old party just doesn’t remain a mute spectator this time too. Not only the ruling party, but the BJP should also act maturely. On one hand, its tallest leader Narendra Modi talks of development and inclusive growth, and on the other, the party lends its support to the VHP yatra, which can disturb the social fabric of the state. Does not this sound strange that Modi takes on VHP in his home state on the issue of razing temples but chooses to keep mum on the 84-kosi yatra. The onus for maintain the communal harmony also lies on the common man, which should not fall prey to the divide and rule politics.
Caste and religion have long dominated politics in India so it’s high time for the people to realise that the political parties have used issues like reservation and sops only to seize power. If the political class was so concerned about the welfare of the downtrodden, sixty years of independent rule was more than enough to uplift a certain community, but this didn’t happen as it would have led to loss of votes. If we want to live in peace and give the next generation a bright future and a peaceful environment, we need to act now and vote for the right person, irrespective of his political association, caste, creed, sect or religion.

Vic Gundotra:  The high-flying Google Inc engineer, key to that company's mobile phone and social initiatives, is a former Microsoft executive who could be tempted to return. Mumbai-born Gundotra is an alumnus of IIT Mumbai.
Tony Bates:  Came to Microsoft two years ago as CEO of the acquired Skype and was recently elevated to lead Microsoft's business development and overall strategy.
Terry Myerson:  The executive in charge of operating systems, which is still the heart of Microsoft, ranging across PCs, tablets, phones and the Xbox game console.
Kevin Turner:  As COO for the last eight years, the former Wal-Mart Stores Inc executive leads Microsoft's enormous sales organization, but is generally considered to lack the technology credibility to be CEO.
Steven Sinofsky:  The former head of the Windows unit was widely tipped as a potential Microsoft CEO until his abrupt departure in November. His reputation has taken a hit since then with the dismal sales of the Surface tablet he launched and the lukewarm reception of Windows 8.
Reed Hastings:  The CEO of Netflix Inc is a rising Silicon Valley star and has intimate knowledge of Microsoft's business after several years on its board, until his departure last year.
Paul Maritz:  One of the key powers in the early days of Windows, Maritz left in 2000 and eventually ran virtualization firm VMware Inc until last year. Talk occasionally surfaces that he could return to Microsoft, but he has never indicated any interest publicly.
Bill Gates:  The co-founder of Microsoft is still chairman, but has focused his day-to-day efforts on philanthropy since 2008 when he vacated his office on campus. People close to him say he is not considering a return to the CEO position.

Movie review: Madras Cafe

 Direction: Shoojit Sircar
 Rating: 4 Star
Madras Cafe

The politics of war is a tough deal to tackle on screen. You could go hyper on jingoism and rake in the moolah as so many mainstream films have done so often. Or, you could try catering realistic, riveting fare but that will always leave nagging doubts at the box-office. Madras Cafe represents more than good entertainment, in this context. The fact that it takes the second route and gets a solo release in Bollywood this week proves there is a ready audience now - specifically in the urban multiplexes - for films that enthral and inform at the same time.
This box-office dynamic is in stark contrast to the time when director Shoojit Sircar made his debut with Yahaan in 2005. That film laying bare terrorism-ravaged Kashmir belonged to the same genre as Madras Cafe. But back then it went unnoticed despite its quality. Madras Cafe is a thriller about Sri Lanka in the time of civil war, and how that sordid chapter and its socio-political aftermath led to the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. There is a point worth note here.
Despite being brave enough to showcase a sensitive slice of history, new Bollywood still does not reveal the courage to take real names. So a twist in imagination makes Rajiv Gandhi into a figure perennially referred to as "ex-PM" in the film. LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) becomes LTF and the militant group's formidable leader Prabhakaran is named Anna (incidentally, Prabhakaran was called Anna by his people).
In a nation where protest groups are forever hungering for mischief (the film has already drawn wrath in Tamil Nadu over the Anna/LTF portrayal), one understands we are still some way off from making direct references as, say, Body Of Lies or Green Zone (you do spot stylistic influences of both these films though Madras Cafe tells an original story).
In his best performance yet, John Abraham puts up a restrained act as Vikram Singh, armyman on a covert RAW mission in Sri Lanka. His probe, as well as interactions with a British war correspondent Jaya (Nargis Fakhri, mercifully getting English dialogues all through), tells him there is a sinister plan aimed at India beneath the rebel activity. Only too late does Vikram realise it could have to do with an attack on the ex-PM. Madras Cafe cocktails its political narrative with superbly scripted suspense.
The film is not strictly about war. Rather, the screenplay (Somnath Dey and Shubendu Bhattacharya) creates an engaging spy thriller with its focus on the grime behind intelligence ops and the societal implications of rebellion. If Sircar cannot resist a comment or two, it is served very quietly, smartly. The film tells a story we already knew. Yet it scores because of the way Sircar maintains intrigue, teasing viewers with regular twists. Irresistible stuff if you love brain work in your movies.

Yahoo overtakes Google to become the number one Web property in the US: comScore

Yahoo

Looks like Yahoo's back in the game, at least in the US. According to a report released by popular digital analytics firm comScore, Yahoo's Internet properties managed to capture the numero uno position in US in the month of July 2013, overtaking Google in the process for the first time in over two years. comScore's Media Metrix Ranks of the top 50 US properties reports Yahoo sites were on the number one position with 225,359,000 unique visitors in July 2013.
This was followed by Google sites with 192,251,000 unique visitors, Microsoft sites with 179,595,000, Facebook with 142,266,000 unique visitors and AOL with 117,395,000 unique visitors. Yahoo has also been ranked number one in comScore's Ad Focus rankings which are computed on the basis of Internet audience reach. The reach of Yahoo sites was recorded at 87.2 percent out of the total sample size of 225 million Internet users, in July.
Google was number four, with a reach of 80.6 percent. The last time Yahoo was number one was May 2011, as pointed out by MarketingLand. This makes it the first time in over two years that Yahoo has managed to pass Google, pushing it to the second position. While some initially linked Yahoo's upswing to the surge in traffic from Tumblr blogs, comScore clarified that Tumblr's traffic figures had not been combined with that of Yahoo's figures yet. In a statement, comScore said, "Tumblr is not currently included in the Yahoo! Sites roll-up.
Seems there are other factors at play, and given how close Yahoo Sites and Google have been in recent months it can likely just be normal seasonal/ month-to-month fluctuations." Yahoo acquired popular blogging platform Tumblr in June for a reported fee of 1.1 billion dollars. Since Marissa Mayer took over as CEO in July 2012, Yahoo has been trying to transform itself into a modern Internet and mobile company. It has been on a buying spree acquiring biggies like Tumblr and has launched revamped versions of its mobile apps and its online image sharing service, Flickr.

hollywood top paid actors 2013

By on 9:54 PM
Robert Downey Jr.
1. Robert Downey Jr.- $75 million The Avengers was the third highest-grossing movie of all time and no star benefited more from that than Robert Downey Jr. Tony Stark might not have been the leader of the group (that honor belongs to Captain America) but Downey was the only indispensable actor which meant he was able to demand the most money. As long as he's willing to keep putting on the Iron Man suit, Downey will remain one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors.
Channing Tatum
2.Channing Tatum- $60 million Tatum gets a lot of attention for his looks but this year the actor proved that he's also one of Hollywood's smartest businessmen. Tatum and director Steven Soderbergh self-financed the movie Magic Mike, based partially on Tatum's past as a male stripper. So when the $7 million film hit it big at the box office, they each took home millions. Now Tatum is growing Mike into a franchise complete with a Broadway show, a proposed bar in New Orleans and a sequel in the works.
Hugh Jackman
3.Hugh Jackman- $55 million Singing, dancing, acting, getting ripped to kick some bad guy's butt, it's all in a day's work for Jackman. The actor, who is maybe best known for playing Wolverine in the many X-Men movies, showed last year that he can also move audiences to tears. As Jean Valjean in Les Miserables he scored an Oscar nomination and helped the musical earn $438 million on a budget of $61 million. Jackman is also a budding entrepreneur. His Laughing Man coffee and tea company donates all profits to charity.
Mark Wahlberg
4.Mark Wahlberg- $52 million Ted was one of the most unexpected hits of 2012. The comedy, about a teddy bear who comes to life and grows up, earned $550 million on a budget of $50 million and helped land stars Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and Seth MacFarlane on our list. Wahlberg has been as comfortable doing comedy as drama with films like The Fighter and he's been nominated for two Oscars along the way. But now he's stepping into his first blockbuster. He'll star opposite a bunch of car robots in the next installment of Transformers which hits theaters summer 2014.
Dwayne Johnson
5.Dwayne Johnson- $46 million The former wrestler is now a bona fide star. For more than ten weeks in 2013, Johnson had a movie in the box office top 10. Fast & Furious 6 grossed more than $500 million in less than two weeks and G.I. Joe: Retaliation is yet another franchise that Johnson has saved. Now The Rock is moving into TV production with The Hero, a reality show where he challenges ordinary people to act like real heroes.
Leonardo DiCaprio
6.Leonardo DiCaprio- $39 million DiCaprio's films might not be very cheery (the actor often dies in the end) but they are super profitable. The 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby, from director Baz Luhrmann, seemed like a tough sell. But with DiCaprio at the helm, the film easily topped $250 million at the box office making it Luhrmann's most successful movie ever. DiCaprio's biggest hit is still the 1997 film Titanic which is the second-highest grossing film of all time. And yes, he dies in the end.
Adam Sandler
7.Adam Sandler- $37 million Maybe Sandler should do more animated films. The funnyman's live action flicks, like That's My Boy and Jack and Jill, have struggled at the box office. But the animated Hotel Transylvania turned out to be Sandler's biggest hit to date grossing $347 million on an $85 million budget. Sandler makes our list this year because he can still demand top dollar for films like Grown Ups 2. The first movie, in 2010, was the second-highest grossing film of his career.
Tom Cruise
8.Tom Cruise- $35 million The 2012 film Jack Reacher is a perfect example of why you should never underestimate Tom Cruise. The movie, about an ex-military sniper, got middling reviews and did mediocre business in the U.S. bringing in only $80 million. But overseas, Jack Reacher was a hit. The $60 million film grossed a total $217 million. With foreign box office more important than ever, Cruise is still one of Hollywood's biggest stars.
Denzel Washington
9.Denzel Washington- $33 million Washington was nominated for his sixth Oscar this year thanks to his performance in Flight as a hero airline pilot battling addiction issues. Washington took a cut to star in the risky film in exchange for a bigger cut if the backend. The bet paid off. The movie earned $162 million on a budget of $31 million.
Liam Neeson
10.Liam Neeson- $32 million Neeson earned more than some men who made the Celebrity 100, like Ben Affleck and Will Smith, but he didn't have their fame numbers. While he might not be in the spotlight as much as some other actors, he's quietly build one of the best careers in Hollywood thanks to low cost, high return films like Taken and The Grey.
